Amazingly, only 63 people died in the quake. The reason was because the World Series matchup was between San Francisco and Oakland – cross-bay rivals – and most people had gone home early to watch the game.

Any other day, and hundreds or thousands of people would have died.

The Giants are playing again tonight. They haven’t won a World Series since 1954, when Willie Mays made this amazing catch.
