<p><strong>…that some of the warming nearer to the surface came from the deep ocean.</strong></p>

<p>The paper is Liang et al. (2015) <a href="http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/abs/10.1175/JCLI-D-14-00550.1?af=R">Vertical Redistribution of Oceanic Heat Content</a>.  The abstract reads (my boldface):</p>
