~ WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE are we raising? What are they teaching in schools these days? Take the roused rabble at the SMU fascist scream-down of a gathering; or the University of Calgary Student Union going all jackboot on their fellow students; or in breaking ugliness, YorkU students getting their jackboots on and going all brownshirt on some Jewish students. WTF?
Back in the day, we were beaten up and beat others up at school; got detentions, punishments, and the rest; snow-ball fights, roughhousing, spankings at home. I remember keeping the younger brother of a bully in a headlock for 15 minutes, because the little twerp thought he could trade in on his big bro’s cred, and intimidate me. We turned out (most of us) not simply despite but because of the reality and consequences.
For the last 20 years, it’s become all about diversity-training, sensitivity, bully-free zones, friendly-words, peer mediation, expulsion for snowballs or name-calling: and so we have spoiled junior tinpot fascists by the time they get to College? What the heck? Is that what our society has taught such kids? That if we are going to have a soft-fascist system, get in on it while the getting’s good?
Better a cop than a perp? Is that really the kind of graduates SMU and UofC really are proud to produce? Snitches? hall-monitors, spies, backstabbers?
As a side-effect, growing up in ye anciente tymes made us more sensible of power-relationships, consequences, and fighting back (with fist and foot) against real bullies. You got to know them, and know who was a potential victim.
So the 7th Century religious bullies within Islam who are trying to scare and silence any fact, criticism, or commentary from the West about them or their activities– they smell very familiar indeed; and betimes, I was one of the bullies myself, so I know how it works. “Don’t you DARE tell the principal, or you’ll get it TWICE as bad!” [ shake fist, sneer menacingly in the intended victim’s face here ].
Barb Hall? SMU punks? UofC administration & student council jerks? Islamo-doofs? Real men and real women know what you are and what you’re about, and can tell the difference because we weren’t raised in the morally inverted “Words mean what you want them to mean, and how does all this make you feel, Billy?” atmosphere. We knew the rough justice of the schoolyard would tell the tale, when the teachers weren’t watching, and parents couldn’t help or rescue. Despite the bruises, name-calling, and tough time of it, most of us didn’t become lickspittles, tattles, or junior gestapo.
They– apparently– were the bad old days, which most of the social engineering is trying to prevent and oppose and avoid: only, it seems like the new system is creating drones, victims, or mini-Hitlers, and not enough people who know what’s right & wrong, how to break the little rules and smelly little orthodoxies of our managed society, and how to remain human in the midst of serious battle. Or if they do turn out well, it’s ever more IN SPITE of, and not because of our pansified soft-fascist school systems and universities and edumacational theories.
Shame on SMU, and UofC and all of us for ever allowing it to become like this. At least those of us with eyes to see are getting a good lesson in how not to do things, and how goofy theories make for goofy outcomes and a goofier society.
