~ YOUTH BRING ENERGY, CHOICES, AND CHANGE to life, and young men and women are potential world-changers. In the West, we forget that many great men and women of the past were youngish people when making their careers and sometimes radical choices; Mary the Mother of Jesus a young teenager when she said yes to God’s gift of a child; many saints and martyrs of the church were in their teens and twenties. The ancient and mediaeval worlds had a lot of scope for young people making a life. Part of our society was once geared to allowing children and youth the protection and opportunity to make the most of themselves. Now we speak of children as environmentally and financially demanding lifestyle choices.
Part of what grips the Islamic world is a crisis of youth and choices. Imagine the usual dictatorship. Will you drown yourself in pleasure? or get super-religious?Join the military or secret police or government? You’re not free to make many choices, change your faith, or openly speak your mind. The freedoms we take for granted and abuse and whine about in the West are not the freedom of most of the Middle East (except Israel). The brightest and best and most passionate leave their homeland, with all the costs that implies.
The young men we see ranting at TV screens and in our midst in the West are making the choice allowed them by a repressive totalitarian Islam: as much a prison of the spirit, as of nations or tribes or peoples. For a passionate young Muslim in today’s environment, jihadism is a toxic but tempting choice, given the options. So the life of the party guy switches suddenly to a “Death To America” guy; so the rich fop St. Francis said no to the wealth and pleasure and privilege of his day and chose a world-changing monastic way. We forget that much of the now-Islamic Middle East was Christian: Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Arabia, Mesopotamia, and even parts of Persia, and Armenia. Now, to return to that faith– or desire a church with a steeple and a bell and no government oppression in most of those same lands– is to risk death, persecution, sorrow for your family, loss of freedoms or jobs, threats of jihad against you personally.
In a strange way, the ciris of no-faith in the West is complementary to the crisis of repressive faith in the Islamic world. Our faith has grown soft under freedom and Leviathan; the Islamic world needs a faith that allows for freedom and faith; individuality and conformity; a true freedom of the spirit and completion of the self that comes from serving God, who has shared our life, and shares his divine life with us through his passion and resurrection. Because we are all tainted with Marxism, we tend only to see religion as private and opiate-like. To Marx we respond that his false faith in the people’s revolution was the opiate, and has oppressed more people and led to more deaths than all the crusades or jihads or pogroms ever have.
The Christian Faith is the root and culmination of Roman Law, Greek thought and drama, and Hebrew Spirituality. If it dies in the West, we lose the root of freedom, and find arbitrary power and utopianisms spring up to try and replace it. That is the poisonous fruit of the French and all subsequent revolutions. The Islamic lands await that re-inheritance, which was stripped away from them by the armies of Islam and Muhammed the Despoiler. From their recovery of the faith of their mediaeval ancestors, they can find the root of freedom under the true God which will truly renew their societies and individuals.
As long as we offer Muslim youth in the West only a disembowelled Christianity or arid agnosticism or flaccid political correctness, it just will not do. Their choice then will be for the exciting lies and clarity of radicalized Islam, before which Western authorities seem powerless and cowardly. It’s a crusade (which we’ve damned and outlawed); it’s a world-changing choice (which we’ve forbidden in conformity, and communtarianism); it’s better than lying beneath the boot of a dictator at home, or following feeble fools in the West, who can’t be bothered to see what’s happening right in front of them, or to defend what they should rightly remember are the Western faith and principles.
We apparently despise ourselves.. why should those who want to take our stuff and replace us not despise us, too? A great civilization is not conquered from outside, until it has begun to destroy itself from within.
I’m not agreeing with Jihad, here, but laying plain the spiritual choices which perhaps underlie the crisis for Muslim and Western young people to find no ‘there’ there when they seek to launch out and choose something good and true and which will make a difference. Secularity or utopia is not true freedom, just as Jihadism is spiritual slavery. ~
