~ OK, MAYBE NOT ULTIMATE EVIL, BUT ALL THOSE rapid-fire segments, addictive little songs, and liberal social engineering isn’t right. Aside from that, I consider the de-monsterization of monsters to be a disservice to the truth of things, and the moral and imaginative education of children. You know, editing all the scary bits out of stories and nursery rhymes, and replacing it with “Happy The Bunny Goes Recycling.”

Pre-Wimpified Sweetums

Cookie Monster? Messy eater. Grover? Groveller. Harry? A bit irritable. Sweetums? Pretty scary in the Henson version of The Frog Prince, but since that, just a misunderstood guy with some facial-hair issues. You know, ‘cuz monsters are funny and nice and stuff. Ho-hum. Everything is nice… except when it isn’t.

Where are the real monsters, human or otherwise? When adults refuse to deal with scary stuff in age-appropriate ways for fear of ‘traumatizing’ their kids, they send the message that this is so horrible, even adults are scared and powerless to handle it. Better to re-write all the stories, only with nice characters and happy endings. Except– not everybody is nice, nor are all endings– or middlings and beginnings– necessarily happy.

The world– while shot through with wonder and glory– is also full of sorrow, darkness, and evil. And even monsters. Some of them have names, and torment people or nations; some have died, but their works and effects live on; some are in our midst, and we want to imagine they are nice, even when that’s not true. The human scale runs from very good to very bad, and so character and choices matter, and we do have a say in who we are and what we become.

Castro? Small monster. American/ EUro totalists? Mini-monsters. Mass-murderers? Monsters. The Left-wing twins of Communism/ Fascism? Monster-think. Bureaucratic mismanagement of health-care resulting in death, untold suffering and difficulty for the sick and their loved ones? Monstrous. Islamo-fascism? A veritable hotbed of monsterism.

To refuse to recognize monsters is not to improve the world, but to partially blind ourselves, and misunderstand human nature, and to be at a loss when confronted with evil.

Young Monsters

A number of years back, some ordinary and shiftless young idiots in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia heard a rumour that the local McD’s fast-food outlet kept loads of money in the safe (not true). They planned a heist, and took along some nasty weapons. Three restaurant-workers were brutally killed, another young woman was crippled for life, and their own lives ruined, since they were easily caught and soon confessed.

Many of the people of the region just couldn’t understand. How could their own local kids go ahead and do something so senseless and deeply evil? Well, because all people are moral agents, and capable of anything, even acts of monstrous evil like the McDonald’s Massacre. As Jesus says, it’s out of the hearts of men that evil comes.

So shame on Sesame Street– liberal good intentions: FAIL. ~

~ BACK IN THE DAY, then-PM Jean Chretien played financial divide & conquer with the Canadian provincial premiers during the infamous budget cutback of the 1990s. That way, they squabbled like siblings over limited gov’t largesse– but never directly attacked or ganged up on the PM himself. Very clever, and Machiavellian: playing politics, and with people’s lives.

Thus, in the various battles over the meaning and propriety of Senator Teddy Kennedy’s abysmally Diana-ish ‘Celebration of Life’ (hardly a funeral), various good Catholics are up in arms with each other over the matter. What to say?

As someone who has handled some big ‘society’ weddings and funerals, I say the responsibility lies with the Church authorities. They should have insisted on a proper funeral homily, and put all the little eulogy thingies perhaps in a warm-up before the mass. And so the homily/ sermon could have dealt with sin & forgiveness, purgatory, mercy over judgement, or whatever other themes might have given a balanced take on the deeply flawed life of a manslaughterer, drunk, adulterer, pro-abortion legislator, and all the rest.

Jesus reserves a lot of anger and condemnation for those who cause others to stumble and fall– sin must come he says, “but woe to those by whom it comes.” Or again, in the wider world, when Saint Paul is considering the effect on new or weak Christians of other Christians eating meat sacrificed to idols (the usual way meat got to the market in many places), he says that theoretically it’s OK, but if it sould offend or cause another to fall away from faith, then don’t do it.

The cowardice, pandering to power, accommodating the demands of political tributes versus spiritual truth– these come because of the choices or lack of them by the Catholic leadership in Massachusetts. They have not rightly loved their neighbours– either in the pews, now the wider nation, nor the soul of Teddy Kennedy and his family.

Those who stumble, who fight and are spiritually offended by such grovelling to Caesar have been caused to stumble, provoked to it my the tresspasses of their spiritual leaders– the fault and occasion of sin lies further up. Such requires confession and repentance, and a clear message about what can and should be said about notorious sinners and the merciful saving and judgement of Christ the Lord.

Heresy or pastoral misdeeds have a cruel and spreading effect– untruth or unlove deeply effects our own souls and the souls of others, because no man is an Island, we are all afflicted with sin, and we have a responsibility for the salvation of one another– hence loving God and your neighbour as the summary of the whole law. That love sometimes is painful, scary, dangerous, or divisive is no news.. but love is to will the eternal best for the other, not just have warm fuzzy feelings and a watery tolerance for whatever is popular or politically correct. ~

The monkey-hooting, legal harassment, and violence directed against pro-lifers is the dirty secret of the pro-preborn killing movement. It is ignored, unreported, and disbelieved for ideological reasons– those extremists are always lying and whining and making a fuss over nothing, and murdering countless piles of abortion doctors, and bombing and stuff.

The internet makes it easy to find out the details of probort violence and abusiveness, and if what I say is true. The evil shooting of James Pouillon– for which Harland James Drake has been charged– is an extension of the wider violence directed against pro-lifers, and part of the protective wall of burnt conscience, bad faith, good intentions, and money-making by the truckload that is the baby-slaughtering business in North America.

In the late 80’s in Toronto, I found out about the local abortion facility– it was near two of my favourite bookstores. As a cleric in training, I’d done some thinking on the issue of pre-born life and abortion, but here was the real thing, only 10 minutes walk from the College. One day I stopped to chat with two peaceful protesters out front of the abortion building, who had a pro-life counselling centre not far away.

As I asked a few questions, three spandex-clad joggers all but ran into us, the lead man swearing as they passed “F*** off and die, you scum!” he suggested. I was a bystander, not carrying a sign or pamphlets. The hate on his face and in his voice was quite startling, for many reasons. The two actual protesters said this sort of thing was common, and that example had been rather mild– being hit, shoved into the street, and otherwise harrassed was usual treatment.

Indeed, those protesters were threatening the very roots of the modern radical freedom from nature and consequences: the freedom to disconnect sex from reproduction; the freedom to destroy another life; the freedom to disconnect sexuality from love in marriage and commitment and parenthood; the freedom to unmake male and female human nature; the freedom to be free of consequences, shame, or guilt; the reduction of human life to a commodity, a medical procedure, an inconvenience to be unmade; the male freedom to let women suffer the greater burden and consequence fo the sexual “revolution; the freedom to do evil, but force others to call it good; the freedom to dehumanize another person, and disassociate his or her weakness and status from one’s own former infancy and pre-birth life.

What’s worse is the feminism that enslaves the minds of so many otherwise good women and that we are willing to chemically and surgically slaughter ourselves, our children, because our magical re-definition of the basic things never works, nor cleanly. We can’t avoid consequences.

With freedoms like that, we find ourselves enslaved– and none are permitted to name the deed for what it is, or to criticize, or even to offer help, advice, monies, or adoption help, as many pro-life groups and volunteers do. Talking about it is just awkward and unpleasant. Using moral language is just mean and hurts people’s feelings. Offering help means there are other choices and possibilities, and that something might be wrong about taking the life of preborn boys and girls.

Let’s just pretend; fund it in part with our taxes; and shut up. ~

That’s the issue: modern same-sex group-think insists that gayitude is the be-all-and-end-all of a life. So militant same-sex activist and actor Ian McKellan goes all hatey on the church and those who oppose same-sexuality, insisting that in order to approve of him, we must ideologically approve of all he does in his private life. Sorry, but I think he’s a great actor. The rest? No thanks, whatever, and stop ripping bits out of the Bible and considering yourself a hero, Mmm-kay?

That’s not free-think, that’s tyranny-think. All shall approve of the party and express utter devotion to Dear Leader, no matter the living hell on earth the Glorious Monster has created.

As renegade liberal and lesbian Camille Paglia has warned us, there is more than a little fascism in modern same-sex politics. Or as Canadian John McKeller puts it (gay himself, he says) in his now-famous article “Homosexuals Opposed to Pride Extremism“,

“The obscene contention made by most activists that constructive and rational opposition to sexual conduct is tantamount to anti-semitism or other forms of racism, is not only intellectually dishonest, but insultingly disrespectful to Blacks, Jews and other minorities. It’s beyond ironic and short-sighted that the fascistic and Marxist ideology behind much modern same-sex victimology and self-identification led to the persecution and execution of gays in such left-wing regimes. Democracy and Christian love and mercy and forgiveness– as in Western civilization, where same-sexuality is tolerated– is the safest environment for people who choose same-sex behaviour. To adopt anti-Western/ Marxist ‘critical theory’ to then deconstruct sexual identity, society, marriage, the traditional family, and the Judaeo-Christian ethic is ultimately shrill, self-defeating, and destructively radical.

Identity politics and totalist group-think are always ugly, no matter who’s advocating it, or whatever the cause.

I know, I know– no matter how careful, thoughtful, or rational my ponderings above, I’m a mindless evil patriarchal white conservative racist hetero-breeder homophobe poopy-head dumb-face.

Their silence keeps me sleepless for I know:
Within that smoke their ash still falls as snow,
To settle on our flesh like fading stars
Dissolve into sharp sparks at break of day.

At dawn a distant shudder in the earth
Disclosed the flight of fire into steel,
The shaking not of subways underground,
But screams from inside flowers made of flame.

We stood upon the Heights like men of straw
Transfixed by flames that started in the sky,
And watched them plunging down in death’s ballet
Too far removed to hear their falling cry.

By noon that band of smoke loomed low
Upon the harbor’s skin and made us gasp;
A hand of smoke that in its curdled crawl
Kept reaching to extend its lethal grasp.

The harp strung bridge held up ten thousand souls
Who’d screaming run beneath the paws of death,
Like dusted ghosts that lived but were not sure
If they lived in light or only for a breath.

They’d writhed and spun within that storm of smoke
And stumbled out to light and clearer air,
To find upon the river’s further shore
No sanctuary other than despair.

The sirens scraped the sky and jets carved arcs
Within a heaven empty of all hope,
That marked its epicenter with one streak
Of black on polished bone where silver’d stood.

By evening all their ash had settled so
That on the leaves outside my window glowed
Their souls in small bright stars until the rain
Cleaned all of what could not be clean again.

We breathed that smoke that bent and crawled.
We learned to hate that smoke that lingered so.
We knew that blood could only answer blood,
And so we yearned to go but not to go.

Within the city shrines were our resolve.
We placed them where our grief would best anneal.
Upon our walls and trees their faces loomed
To gaze at us from time beyond repeal.

Their last lost summer faded into ash.
Their faces faded into name scratched stones.
Our years flowed into endless desert seas
Where warplanes prowl in search of bones.

In time their smoke and ash became but words
In stories told at dinner, told by rote,
Or in the comments made by magazines
For whom the “larger issues” were of note.

In time their faces faded with the rains,
The little altars thick with wax were scraped,
But still beneath clear plastic they endure
