Maybe you heard about the Assises Contre l’islamisation that were held in Paris on December 18, 2010. One of the guest speakers was Tom Trento, director of the Florida Security Council. You can listen to his speech here.

That one (1) person complained about Dire Strait’s awesome ’80s hit song “Money For Nothing” is beyond idiotic for two reasons. First, it’s an ironic rock song about ordinary working joes making fun of rock singers. Co-writers Mark Knophler & Sting poking fun at themselves, and critics, and other rock stars.
Read the lyrics. Satire.
Second, one person versus the freedoms of everybody else to listen, not listen, ignore, or enjoy Dire Straits is the very definition of insanocracy. The absolute individual versus everybody else is a special kind of minoritarianism.. the radio station in question should have advised said complainant to exercise their freedom and judgement and individual responsibility to turn off the radio– as I do whenever Barry Manilow, AC/DC, or Bonnie Tyler come on the airwaves.
The basic idea of “Suck It Up”, or “Get Over Your [expletive] self” are far more useful in dealing with whingers, rather than “Poor Widdle baby.. We Make It Aww Better”. There’s not even the germ of an idea in trying to silence a song which can be dignified with a reasoned response. That such banning got to the Canadian Broadcast Council? Official Canada sucks. Buncha faggots.
How about some irate woman register a CBSC complain because in the lyric “chicks for free”, women-persons are being compared to juvenile poultry, and their innate worth as persons demeaned in that they are “free”. PLEASE don’t tell me somebody really just did that already.

As for idiom, “faggot” was not only ’80s slang for these who chose same-sex behaviour, but also appropriate for the scary wave of big-haired gender-bendy make-up-wearing male dandies that swamped the music industry for a while.. which persons, to ordinary working joes as depicted in the lyrics, would have been right faggotty indeed. You know, like Prince.
The other aspect of this controversy is the rift between various parts of the same-sex community– for there are fascist faggots and non-fascist faggots, and some of the latter cadre will apparently be on hand at Q-104 Halifax’s “Money For Nothing” music marathon to make the point that deliberately silencing others because of political correctness isn’t ever a good idea.
Sadly, this is even what passes for proper conduct in our society and on university campuses– witness former Federal “Justice” Minister Allan Rock’s abuse of Anne Coulter; the Carleton anti-prolife battles; all based on the fragile idea that nobody ever anywhere should have to be made “uncomfortable” by an idea, fact, book, or person from outside the current leftist puddle of 2010-11.
To put it simply, this is a sign of the death of freedom, culture, thought, imagination, courage, and curiousity. This is true zombiehood, minus the apocalypse. This is the forbidding of any past, present, or future which is “unapproved” by some fickle and irrational authority. This is, in part, what results when real orthodoxy in religion is banned, and false little orthodoxies start springing up like toadstools and poisonous mushrooms.

~ SO A ‘LONE GUNMAN‘ (possibly with an accomplice) pulls out a Glock at a local townhall gathering in Arizona.. horror & blood ensues. Thing is, what if there had been another person there with a gun? A trained, law-abiding concealed-carry civilian?
This is the non-utopian question and scenario which the gun-hating Left will not allow. Thing is, in several situations in the U.S., precisely this good news happened. A college-shooting was prevented; a church massacre was stopped cold. We don’t hear a lot about those because they Don’t Fit The Narrative.
If Teh Elf were there, he’d do it.. and bear the consequences of the memory, sorrow, and the cost of doing the right thing. I’d probably need an adult diaper-system before, during, and after.. and preferably a decent dose of 18-year old Glen Livet once the excitement was over, if I lived. Thing is, unlike the video games and movies, people don’t usually survive a bullet-shot.. let alone two. Bad man– or Teh Elf– would be down. Maybe some lives saved.
It’s unclear if there were police there.. or if they showed up later, or just couldn’t make a difference. However, there are lots of circumstances where the police cannot and will not be able to prevent or rescue you. One armed teacher at Virginia Tech would have meant a dead bad guy; the same at Ecole Polytechnique; also for Columbine High.
The sad fact is that the extreme confiscatory anti-gun notions of the Left mean a crippled populace, defenceless and harmless– and no compensatory protection from police or gunlaws which (in Canada and Britain) mean that only criminals and police have guns, and ordinary people must use other means, or else be at risk of gun violence.
Of course, anti-gunnists never mention the Swiss, where crime is very low, and where almost everybody who has served in the military has a serious gun in their home. Guns. Lotsa guns.
As with the anti-profiling regime for airport security, the refusal of the elites to realize that gun-crime is predominantly linked to poverty and race– is a crime against everybody else. Further, lone gunmen have a common profile, behaviour, are often immigrants or jihadist Muslims. The unhappy students should be caught by schools long before guns get into the matter. Perhaps the irony of a shooting-spree at “gun free” Virginia Tech is lost on some people.
Universal gun-hating? It’s a willingness to allow actual people– especially the otherwise defenceless– to suffer & die in the interests of a theoretical postition about some sort of ideal world which has never existed. The Left were always keen on sacrificing others to their false idols. In thise case– even if there were tougher gunlaws– Mr. Laughner’s gun was.. illegal. He had a criminal record.
And let’s not forget the other heroes of that terrible day, first-responders and surgeons and care-givers who head towards emergencies and heal souls and bodies at such times as these… and the dear old husband who died saving his wife during the shooting. ~

~ IT IS A MIGHTY STRANGE FACET of our society that we watch dramatic good vs. evil & adventure movies, and vicariously live in them, presumably praising ourselves at the good guy or hero/ heroine in the battles that face those in the story.
But what of the same battles in our own world– whether with utopians, Jihadists, eugenicist/ abortioneers, and other folk with orcish notions of remaking all things in their own image? Are we brave then? Are we inspired by stirring stories to look at our own place & time, and to do what we might where we are?
We do not know how we would act if confronted by the SS, or the KGB, or the softer forms of corporate evil common in our day. If history tells us anything, we should not be assured– minus past experience doing so– that we could boldly stand against evil.
So the story of the German resistance is one of a mish-mash of unlikely folks, thrown together by faith via university and family and friendship, who dare to stand against the silencing evil of the machine that was Leftist Hitlerism. The White Rose resisters– including Sophie Scholl– did not set out with the goal of a show-trial, beheading, and promising lives cut short. I strongly recommend that readers of this blog read the stories & watch the movies about The White Rose, Deitrich Bonhoeffer, and others who in our modern age have confronted manifest state evil and conquered, even with their deaths. The Arizona murders in which the Democrat Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has been shot in the head, and others slain and injured is another outbreak of that old brutality so often directed against those in power– assassination by crazy, evil, or violently opposed people. America has rather more a history of political assassination and attempts at such and death-threats against politicians and celebrities.
The ugliness of the Leftist soul in America is increasingly revealed in how the Leftocracy, chattering classes, the lefty blogosphere now do not recoil in horror from horrible events, but a la Rahm & Obama, not letting any crisis go to political waste. This time, Obama did not take a potshot, but all the usual suspects did.
“They need to deftly pin this on the tea partiers,” said the Democrat. “Just like the Clinton White House deftly pinned the Oklahoma City bombing on the militia and anti-government people.”
How purely despicable. Human death by violence is a reason for mourning, prayer, seeking reasons, and comforting the victims… no gloating, fixing blame, or figuring out how to blacken the reputation of political opponents via tragedy. One might think that after a lot of recent failed premature “The Repubs/ Conservative/ TeaBaggers DidIt!!”, the American Left might (a) wait for the facts, and (2) look to themselves for being a bin of more than average looney, and (iii) make sure their nasty public rhetoric matches their own warnings against ramping up the temperature of U.S. politics, (d) realize their own policies, politics, and posture over the past decade has made things worse, more extremist, and more actually violent, oppressive, anti-democratic, and verbotenish.
Labelling ordinary political opponents as unAmerican, traitors, extremists, and whatever other red-flag words will ramp up the crazy is the problem, no matter which particular Republicrat is in power. Ideology cannot trump civility, political discourse, the balancing of radically different political visions.
The secularist hope of utopia does make for teh crazy, though– it’s their religion, their hope, their this-worldly heaven-on-earth thing that reduces all hope, love, faith, desire to the perfect regime just around the corner if we could only convert or shove aside the rabble and deadwood in the way. After all, before the real God became illegal, the sense of transcendant truth intersecting in real life & poltics and culture, heaven was not– shuddup Marxists– a drug or dream, but the entire context in which life was lived, the goal, ideal, destiny and end of the human person.
The proper end or destiny of a being is what it was made by and made for. If humans are made by God, then their destiny and desire is an infinite object, God himself. If God makes himself known to his creatures according to their capacity, and shares his own sort of life with them, then their lives are both theirs, and God-in-them. All of life is in God– hence Christ’s sharp comment about rendering unto God that which is God’s.
That’s the difference a lived religion makes in society, culture, politics, and elsewhere– and the vacuum left behind when churches and souls grow weak and comfortable. As Kathy Shaidle has very well put it–
“Like pacifists whose lifestyle is protected by the very armies they loathe, libertarian atheists live off the fumes of Judeo/Christian morality and call it “reason.”
Hence AlGorism, O-Ba-Ma, mass-panics over climate, diet, population, environment, plagues, and all the rest. Some are real, some are prods to manage public opinion and others camoflage to distract from real problems.
We’re a generation or two on in the squandering of our spiritual, moral, and human capital.. and the fumes are getting mighty thin. As a militant Islam on one front, and militant and insistent secularity on the other demand victory on their own terms, the intellectual intolerance of and attacks on serious versus cultural Judaeo-Christians will only increase.
Pray for Rep. Gabby Giffords, her family & friends, and all the people killed or hurt in Arizona; pray for the soul of the assassin; pray for the wellness of the American body-politic in these trouble times. Live your faith, or live as if we hoped for the best for all of us, and the health and peace of society versus murder, chaos, or other ideological nastiness.
