~ FOR ALMOST VERY generation, the past was more better, golden, less decayed in faith, manner, morals, you name it. Looking back to a golden age is a profoundly human thing, because unless you’re really old and very thoughtful, you didn’t live then, with the goods and evils of that actual time.
Still and all, the last 150 years has been an extraordinary and crazy-changy time in human civilization, when the speed and nature of technological change has transformed human living and being, birth, life, and death, and political experiments on society. The past 200+ years have seen some truly bad ideas exalted over life, society, peace, and ordinary people. This particular road to hell was very nicely paved with some of the best of good intentions, for whatever that’s worth. Sincerity does not equal truth or goodness or sinless perfection and motives. Self-deception is still the strongest drug we know of.
Despite the oceans of blood in the 20th century, for some people they think we’re still “Progressing” upwards morally, technologically, and politically. That’s a very late 18th century notion, and part of how we got those oceans of blood. It’s also a mockery of a Christian idea, that history has a direction, an upward motion, that “Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done” is words, purpose, but also a participation in the almighty purpose and providence of God– that life has a meaning, a power in us greater than us, and yet it is not only us, or our dreams and ideas.
Separated from God, this idea becomes various forms of socialism/ communism, God becomes abstractions like ‘history’ or ‘progress’ or ‘Hopenchange’– all used to deceive and compel people to get with the radical program, and to see those who oppose the same as enemies, or inhuman expendables. Progressocialcommunism has the form of a religion, but not the power and truth of it, which is why it creates true believers who are capable of doing and believing deeply stupid and horrible things. In the name of such ideas, governments around the world killed hundreds of millions of people within the past century.
As G.K. Chesterton said of the early 20th century, it wasn’t just that vice had triumphed over virtue, but that the virtues were unloosed from Christianity, and became shambling giants rambling all over the landscape, wreaking havoc. So compassion for the poor? becomes massive social welfare programs creating dependency, abortion, single-parent families, and social decay. A desire for a peaceful and orderly society? becomes totalitarianism. A hope to prevent the suffering of children? becomes heaps of dead pre-born children.
This new century and millennium does not promise of itself much difference from the last century. It is, as always up to courageous truth loving good-seeking love-loving individuals and groups of the same to fight back, speak out, educate, resist, to cast their bolts at the walls of unjust power and find out whether they are stone or sane or paper.
For if we return to the Christian understanding, its the Almighty Himself working in and through all things against evil, sin, and destructive virtue gone wild, not just we ourselves.~

~ IT ALL TURNED at Gettysburg– that disastrous assertion of will by General Robert E. Lee that killed so many on both sides, but gutted the heart out of his army. After that, it was escape, entrench, no more grand Napoleonic-style charges against the terrible new cannons and rifles of the Civil War. Before, it was courage, and fearlessly taking on many times their numbers– after that, the South fought on, but with less and less confidence and courage.
Sometime blogger, former Anglican, and general nuisance Gerry Hunter commented on the Surveillance article above thusly (on Book of Faces):
“America always liked to trumpet the virtues of their system of governmental “checks and balances.” The provisions providing for it are still in place, but they are, evidently, not being used. One wonders: Has there been such moral decay that, in a thusly weakened state, the American body politic has been infected with a rampant and chronic condition of cowardice?“
One of those comments which hits the bullseye. What do we– or Obama, or David Cameron, or Justin Trudeau– really believe? What would we or they die for, if anything? Or has the general cowardice and drift and gutlessness– except against safe targets– overcome our fighting spirit?
What does Obama believe in, except how great he & his cronies and schemes are, and how terrible is the civilization that he currently misleads, as misleader of a crippled and bloated and bankrupted America? Or again, in the face of the insidious rot and ongoing slow-burn internal war in ever more parts of the United Kingdom actually CAUSED by a confident and militant Islam, kiltless and gutless son of Scotland David Cameron pledges to sternly battle.. Islamophobia!
Appease. Cringe & cower. Ignore. Compromise. Deny and fudge. Bully the harmless, kneel before the scary– buy them off, change your principles (while pretending not to), fund terrorism & persecution of non-Muslims. Apply, lather, rinse, repeat.
Of course good men have done bad things in the past– but, contra to the Marxist & endless second-guessing of fashionable academia, it is possible to stand for good & true and worthwhile things, even though imperfectly. Endless worry about mistakes or imperfection can paralyze a person, a society, a whole civilization. Cowardice led to World War II in particular, as the so-called “pacifists” refused to see that there were things worth fighting for, including the very freedom they had to protest war– freedoms not granted under the German or Fascist or Japanese systems, and– had they won– silenced for long years, along with the voices and lives of all who would not fit in.
There simply are things worth standing, fighting, and dying for– if you cannot believe that, or name any such things, then you are part of what is wrong with our world today. Consider William Wallace, who indeed died for Scotland, for freedom, for the love of his people– his motto:
‘Dico tibi verum,
libertas optimum rerum,
nunquam servili sub nexu,
vivito fili‘
.. which translates to
‘I tell you the truth,
the best of all things is freedom:
never my son,
to live under the bonds of slavery’.
I think Mr. Hunter is on to something– cowardice (and bullying the weak) has become the operative principle of too much of the West. We will regret it, as surely as the British came to regret their constant appeasement of the rising Adolf Hitler.. as did the Austrians, the Czechs, all of Europe, and the world.
However, the power of our modern war-making means that World War III– which some consider to have already begun– will wreak a terrible havoc on the world, and countless people. ITYS. ~

The more articles I read, the more I am most deeply impressed with the stable of folks & the ideas @ The Imaginative Conservative blog. Here no rants, no simplistic politicization.. and here no “Republicans/ America/ secularist capitalism/ libertarianism right or wrong”.
I just love it, enjoy every posting, and thank God for the good ideas, classically Christian understanding, and wisdom that pervades the project. It’s not how I think and am, exactly, but much of it is what I’m working towards thinking, and would hope to be… you know– braining gooder and wording more better about stuff, and things.

~ I WAS NEVER a young fan of superstitions, old wive’s tales, or odd sayings like “You Can’t Have Your Cake, and Eat It, Too”. Those old ways of thinking have a lot more sense in then than my brilliant young teen self realized. In this case, you can’t have it both ways.
It’s a human thing, to want stuff with no consequences; or, to want reality to adjust to our delusions and misunderstanding. Sadly, such delusions– when made government policy or the accepted idea of the moment– don’t avoid reality, but cover it up, as people suffer when the tsunami of utterly predictable consequences washes over them.
F’rinstance– the Very Liberal U.S. Methodists have been cheer-leading for all things communist & Obama.. but are now noticing that their health-care arrangements for clergy are not going to work once the Messiah’s master-plans kick in, and the Zombie-Robot of ObamaCare starts storming about, laying waste to the landscape like some American-made Godzilla. The olden-style affordable health-care depended on pre-Obama arrangements, a healthy economy, a lot of full-time jobs, and other matters that the parasitical socialist denominational bigwigs were pleased to simultaneously take for granted and benefit from and complain about.
It’s what eventually happens to everyone who wars on reality, against God & truth, and who take everything good for granted because, hey, they somehow deserve it.
Cake? Eat it too? Not so much akshully.
A lot of progressive-types who enjoyed capitalism, freedom, the hard work of those who went before and those who worked and supported America instead of working for its collapse are going to learn all about what happens when the system you take for granted is fundamentally bankrupted by the people you thought were on your side. Utopia instead of heaven? Free stuff for everybody, at no cost? All the blessings of faith & peace & hard work, minus those very things? Dear useful Christian idiots– the revolution will start to eat you first.
You cannot keep your cake, and eat it. You cannot sup with Satan, and not get evil-cooties. You cannot serve God and earthly wealth, nor Christ and anti-Christ. Buckle up for the very foreseeable consequences Roller-Coaster of No Fun Whatsoever. ~

~ WHAT A WONDERFUL difference there is between the movies 1993’s Gettysburg, and 2003’s Gods and Generals. I’ve been working through Michael & Jeff Shaaras Civil War trilogy, but am most disappointed in the cleaning up efforts done by Shaara to de-flowerize the language of the times. Shame shame shame.
We can imagine Hamlet muttering “OK, so should I off myself, or what?”, instead of “To be, or not to be: that is the question”. Bowdlerizing (named for a pre-Victorian cleaner-upper of the naughty bits) is always dreadful, not least when it steals the authentic words (and therefore thoughts & ideas) of the original people. How very, very modern: imagining we have the right to mess about with everything, ours being the supreme moment of brilliance and wisdom, and therefore judge of all things ever. Not so much.
Still– glad to see the prequel to Gettysburg, Gods And Generals, got it right– despite being more loosely based on the Shaaras; even more glad to see actor and decent human being Jeff Daniels recapitulating his performance of Lawrence Chamberlain (and Thomas C. Howell as his brother Thomas, and a fair dozen other repeat-actors); and so many very fine performances from actors large and small, and the usual committed host of Civil War re-enactors.
And– praise the Lord– in Gods & Generals we do not have to see Tom Berenger as General Longstreet, with what may be the worst beard in moviedom. ~
