<p>Antes das redes sociais, existiram as comunidades virtuais. Howard Rheingold recorda: &#8220;desde o Verão de 1985, durante uma média de duas horas por dia, sete dias por semana, liguei o meu computador ao telefone e à WELL (Whole Earth &#8216;Lectronic Link), um sistema de conferência por computador que permite a pessoas de todo o mundo conversarem em público e troquem correio electrónico em privado (e-mail). A ideia de uma comunidade acessível apenas pelo ecrã do meu computador pareceu-me fria de início mas aprendi rapidamente que as pessoas podem ter uma paixão pelo e-mail e por conferências em computador. Eu tornei-me uma delas. Preocupo-me com essas pessoas que conheci através do meu computador e preocupo-me profundamente com o futuro do meio que nos permite reunir.<br>Não estou sozinho nesse apego emocional a um ritual tecnológico aparentemente sem sangue&#8221;.</p>
<p>A partir da WELL, ele descobriu a Usenet, as subculturas dos MUDs e dos canais de IRC, as BBSs, &#8220;mailing lists&#8221; e &#8220;e-journals&#8221;. Na realidade, &#8220;webs de relações pessoais no ciberespaço&#8221; &#8211; como as redes sociais actuais.</p>
