A swamp in Halruaa.

Circa 1150 DR, this was dry land, surrounding the tower of a conjurer named Akhlaur. A botched casting resulted in the wizard’s disappearance… and in a portal remaining open, through which water and monsters flowed. Fast-forward to the present, and while the River Ghalagar drains much of the water coming through the portal, a still-expanding swamp has claimed nearly 3,000 square miles. Many have tried to uncover (and neutralize) the source of the flooding, but these efforts have been resisted by the denizens of the swamp: snakes, crocodiles, piranha, and other typical swamp monsters, plus ghouls, wights, and something decidedly atypical… laraken. These creatures are found nowhere else in Faerûn and it may be safely assumed that they had something to do with Akhlaur’s demise.
