<p>Small harmless denizens of <a href="https://xaeyruudh.wordpress.com/2012/02/03/underdark-locations/" title="Underdark Locations">the Underdark</a>.  They swell up like bullfrogs when exposed to fouled air, so are often used by <a href="https://xaeyruudh.wordpress.com/2012/03/03/svirfneblin/" title="Svirfneblin">svirfneblin</a> in mine shafts and other isolated tunnels.</p>
<h3>DM&#8217;s Notes</h3>
<p>Their use as &#8220;early warnings&#8221; is similar to the mining duty of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_Canary#Miner.27s_canary" target="_blank">canaries</a> in our world.</p>
